We, at The People’s Game, have received this communiqué from a shadowy organization calling itself the 2014 Global General Strike. We’ve done some research and it seems they have offices in Detroit, Michigan; Porto Alegre, Brazil; Manchester, England; Barcelona, Catalonia; and the Esalen Institute. Here’s the text we received:

We call upon all people of goodwill to join us in taking a full one-month holiday during the 2014 World Cup. We seek nothing less than the complete shutdown of the global economy in the service of human liberation. Only those people involved in providing essential services – i.e. garnering and distributing food and maintaining satellite broadcast services – will labor during this global holiday. For this sacrifice, they will be paid a double wage. Food and shelter will be free for all humanity during the holiday.

We in the 2014 GGS decided upon this course of action due to the tremendous fatigue suffered by all comrade football fans during the first two weeks of this year’s World Cup. This group of people has now swelled to represent the majority of humanity – critical mass has been achieved – its time to take over.

Why dilute joy with alienated labor? No more working for The Man. We have the wealth. The earth provides enough to live as we truly wish.

Our slogan is: Football and Plentitude.

We expect all sane and rational people to support this call.

p.s. those not participating will receive at first a yellow card, and then a red – at which point they will miss the match
