On today’s podcast, Alan Minsky and Meleiza Figueroa analyze Spain’s spectacular meltdown at the Maracanã in its game against Chile, making the defending champions the first team to be eliminated from the 2014 World Cup! In the first half, we discuss various aspects of the game on the field, in light of the apparent death of ‘tiki-taka,’ Spain’s signature style of play. In the second half, Meleiza takes a look at what’s been going on outside Maracanã, with Christopher Gaffney, urban geographer based in Rio de Janeiro, who’s been writing about the protests and the transformation of public space in Brazil as a result of the World Cup’s neoliberal grand slam.
